June is Men’s Health Month which is the time to bring awareness to the health issues that all men face. This month is dedicated to enriching men’s health and wellness by sharing a large range of national screenings and educational campaigns.  Statistically, men are less likely to seek healthcare than women which makes it difficult to spot and treat a diagnosis early on. They typically also exhibit a fear of diagnosis, with more than 40% of men deciding to not go to the doctor unless they have a serious medical condition.

It is important to understand the health risks of men over the age of 65 and the regular screenings that are recommended for this age group. Some screening tests that are recommended are:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm
  • Blood pressure
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Depression
  • Diabetes mellitus, type 2
  • Lipid disorders

There are many different health risks that men face on a daily basis once they reach the age of 65. A specific health threat includes prostate cancer which is the second leading cause of cancer death among men in the United States. There are preventative measures that should be taken to lower the chance of getting prostate cancer which include avoiding smoking, regular exercise, and eating a healthy diet. Other health risks can include cardiovascular and respiratory disease, influenza, diabetes, and pneumonia. Specifically, heart disease affects 37% of men who are 65 and older, while only affecting 26% of women. High blood pressure and high cholesterol can increase the chances of having a stroke or developing cardiovascular disease. Exercising and eating well can allow seniors to keep a healthy weight with a well-balanced diet which can improve senior’s health.
