Where Are the Best Senior Care Business Opportunities?

We all know the old adage of “location, location, location.” In terms of business success, where you choose to open often matters just as much as the quality of the services you offer. So when it comes to identifying the best senior care business opportunities, which locations are going to give you the chance to run a thriving business that continues to grow over time?

If your mind first goes to what are often referred to as “retirement states,” you’re not wrong. States with a warmer climate, such as Florida, Texas, and California, are often thought of as magnets for senior citizens. These states do, in fact, contain high numbers of older residents. However, it is just as important to consider areas that have a high percentage of their populations in the age bracket of 65 and older, not only those with large numbers of seniors.

Analyzing Population Statistics to Find the Best Senior Care Business Opportunities

A recent report by the Population Reference Bureau shows some surprising results by ranking state populations according to the percentage of residents that qualify as senior citizens. For example, while California has 5,976,000 seniors, this number represents only 15.2% of its population. In other words, the population of the state is relatively young. This can be contrasted with a state such as Maine, which has only 294,000 seniors, but 21.8% of the population is aged 65 or older.

Other states with high percentages of seniors include West Virginia, Vermont, and Delaware, which all have 20% or more of their population in the senior demographic. Montana, Hawaii, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania are not far behind, with 19% or more of the state population aged 65 and over.

So what does this mean when it comes to parsing out the best senior care business opportunities? The good news for entrepreneurs looking to enter the home care industry is that there are markets to be tapped into across the country, not only in states commonly considered to be retirement havens.
